Global tuberculosis report 2019

World Health Organization

Abstract

The Global tuberculosis report 2019 provides a comprehensive assessment of the global tuberculosis (TB) epidemic and progress in prevention, diagnosis, treatment, financing and research at global, regional and national levels. Produced by the World Health Organization, the report examines implementation of the End TB Strategy and commitments adopted at the 2018 United Nations high-level meeting on TB. Drawing on data reported by countries and international databases, it analyses trends in TB incidence, mortality and drug-resistant tuberculosis, as well as progress towards global milestones and targets for 2020, 2030 and 2035.

The report reviews key aspects of the TB response, including case detection, treatment outcomes, HIV-associated TB, preventive treatment, financing gaps, universal health coverage and multisectoral action on social determinants of health. It highlights persistent challenges such as underdiagnosis, underreporting and limited access to care for people with multidrug-resistant TB, while documenting gains in notifications, treatment coverage and preventive services in several countries and regions. The publication also summarizes developments in TB research and innovation, including diagnostics, medicines and vaccines, and emphasizes the need for sustained political commitment, increased investment and strengthened accountability to accelerate progress towards ending the global TB epidemic.
