Global tuberculosis report 2020
World Health Organization
Abstract
Tuberculosis remains a major global public health challenge, ranking among the leading causes of death from infectious diseases and closely linked to social and economic determinants. This report presents a comprehensive assessment of the global tuberculosis epidemic and the response to it at global, regional and national levels, drawing on data reported by nearly all countries worldwide and aligned with international commitments such as the Sustainable Development Goals, the End TB Strategy and the political declaration of the United Nations high-level meeting on tuberculosis.
It examines trends in disease burden, including incidence, mortality and drug-resistant tuberculosis, and evaluates progress towards established targets. The report describes key components of the response, including diagnosis, treatment, prevention services and financing, alongside the role of research and innovation. Particular attention is given to persistent gaps in access to care, health system performance and the influence of social determinants. It also analyses the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on tuberculosis services and outcomes, highlighting risks to recent gains and future targets. Intended for policymakers, programme managers and stakeholders, it underscores the need for strengthened multisectoral action, increased investment and sustained commitment to accelerate progress towards ending the tuberculosis epidemic.
