Abstract
Tuberculosis remains a leading infectious cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, closely associated with poverty, vulnerability and inequities in access to care. This executive summary presents a concise assessment of the global tuberculosis epidemic and the response to it, drawing on data reported by countries and aligned with international commitments such as the Sustainable Development Goals, the End TB Strategy and the political declaration of the United Nations high-level meeting on tuberculosis.
It examines recent trends in incidence, mortality and drug-resistant tuberculosis, highlighting that progress towards global targets remains insufficient despite gradual declines in disease burden. The summary outlines key components of the response, including diagnosis, treatment and prevention services, financing, and research and innovation, while identifying persistent gaps in case detection, access to quality care and coverage of preventive interventions. Particular attention is given to the influence of social determinants and the need for multisectoral action, as well as to the projected impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on tuberculosis services and outcomes. Intended for policymakers and stakeholders, it underscores the urgency of strengthened commitment, increased investment and accelerated implementation of effective interventions to advance progress towards ending the tuberculosis epidemic.
