Global tuberculosis report 2018

World Health Organization

Abstract

The Global Tuberculosis Report 2018 provides a comprehensive assessment of the global tuberculosis (TB) epidemic and progress in prevention, diagnosis, treatment and research at global, regional and national levels. Published in advance of the first United Nations high-level meeting on TB, the report reviews commitments made under the WHO End TB Strategy and the Sustainable Development Goals, and examines progress towards targets for reducing TB incidence and mortality by 2030. Using data reported by countries to WHO and information from international databases, the report analyses trends in TB burden, including HIV-associated TB and drug-resistant TB, and highlights persistent gaps in case detection, treatment coverage and financing.

The report presents estimates of TB incidence, mortality and multidrug-resistant tuberculosis worldwide, alongside data on treatment outcomes, preventive services and health system responses. It discusses the expansion of rapid molecular diagnostics, treatment of latent TB infection, universal health coverage, social determinants of TB and funding needs for TB prevention and care. The publication also reviews developments in TB research and development, including diagnostics, medicines and vaccines, and emphasizes the importance of strengthened political commitment, multisectoral accountability and sustained investment to accelerate progress towards ending the global TB epidemic.
