Global tuberculosis report 2022

World Health Organization

Abstract

Tuberculosis remains a major global public health challenge and one of the leading causes of death from a single infectious agent, closely linked to poverty, undernutrition, HIV infection and other social and economic determinants. This annual report, part of a series produced by the World Health Organization since 1997, presents a concise assessment of the global tuberculosis epidemic and the response to it at global, regional and national levels, in the context of international commitments such as the Sustainable Development Goals and the End TB Strategy.

It examines recent trends in disease burden, including incidence, mortality and drug-resistant tuberculosis, drawing on data reported by over 200 countries and territories representing more than 99% of the global population and TB cases. The report describes key components of the response, including diagnosis and treatment, prevention, financing, universal health coverage and determinants, and research and innovation. It highlights the substantial impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has disrupted access to services, reduced case detection and reversed progress in reducing deaths and incidence. The 2022 edition adopts a format centred on key findings and messages, complemented by expanded digital content accessible via web platforms and applications. Intended for policymakers, programme managers and stakeholders, it underscores the need for strengthened multisectoral action, increased investment and accelerated implementation of effective interventions to restore progress and advance towards ending the tuberculosis epidemic.
