Abstract

Multiple public health priorities continue to evolve in response to changing risk factors, scientific advances and global inequities, requiring coordinated policy action and sustained investment. This news article compiles a series of brief updates from the World Health Organization and partners, presenting recent developments across key areas of global health and highlighting cross-cutting challenges related to prevention, equity, environmental and planetary health, health system strengthening and the role of fiscal policies such as health taxes.

The article reports WHO recommendations to increase taxation on sugary drinks and alcohol to reduce noncommunicable diseases and injuries, alongside updated guidelines on HIV clinical management, including optimized antiretroviral regimens, prevention of vertical transmission and tuberculosis care. It describes significant global progress in reducing the burden of trachoma through implementation of the SAFE strategy, and outlines a global analysis of human genomic technologies in clinical research, emphasizing persistent inequities in access and representation. Additional sections highlight the health impacts of poor solid waste management and call for multisectoral action, as well as the validation of Brazil’s elimination of mother-to-child HIV transmission as a major public health milestone. The article also notes the impact of prolonged conflict on health systems in Sudan. Intended for policy-makers, researchers and public health stakeholders, it provides an overview of current priorities and coordinated efforts to strengthen prevention, equity and access to essential health services.
