Assessment of the psychological state in patients with drug-resistant pulmonary tuberculosis (DR-TB)

Abstract
<bold>Objective:</bold> to study the psychological state in patients with DR-TB. <bold>Materials and Methods:</bold> retrospective operational study to assess the degree of psycho-emotional disturbance of patients with DR-TB at the beginning of treatment. Sample size: 513 patients with DR-TB who received treatment at the clinic of the National TB Institute according to the short-term and individualized regimens of treatment if DR-TB within the framework of scientific developments of the country. Patients were questioned before treatment using the following form of primary psychosocial assessment - the PatientHealthQuestionnaire (PHQ-9) depression self-assessment scale and testing to determine the level of anxiety and depression. Distribution of patients by characteristics was performed by age; by gender; by case of disease: new case - 274 (53.4%), relapse - 116 (22.7%), treatment failure - 114 (22.4%), treatment after a break - 9 (1.8%) participants. <bold>Results:</bold> a normal mental state was observed in only 41.4% of patients, subclinically expressed depressive mood disorder - in 11.8% of patients; subclinically expressed anxiety disorder - in 9.4%; subclinically expressed anxiety-depressive disorder - in 8.2% of patients. Clinically expressed depressive disorder - in 3.9% of patients; clinically expressed anxiety disorder - in 2.2%; clinically expressed anxiety-depressive disorder - in 23.1%. Suicidal ideas with varying degrees of severity were present in 6.7 % of patients. <bold>Conclusions:</bold> comprehensive psychological support should be a mandatory component in the treatment of patients with DR-TB, which will significantly improve the psychological state of patients and their adaptation in society.
