Abstract

This publication presents the web annexes accompanying the 2022 update of the WHO operational handbook on tuberculosis, Module 4: treatment – drug-resistant tuberculosis treatment. The document provides detailed technical information to support implementation of WHO recommendations for the management of drug-resistant tuberculosis (DR-TB), including multidrug- or rifampicin-resistant tuberculosis. It compiles practical reference materials intended for clinicians, programme managers and health-care providers involved in DR-TB treatment and patient care.

The annexes include comprehensive information sheets for tuberculosis medicines used in DR-TB treatment regimens, covering mechanisms of action, dosing, formulations, pharmacokinetics, drug interactions, adverse reactions, contraindications and monitoring requirements. Additional sections address the management of adverse events associated with DR-TB medicines and active tuberculosis drug-safety monitoring and management (aDSM). The publication also includes guidance on use of medicines in special populations and clinical circumstances, including pregnancy, renal or hepatic impairment and central nervous system involvement. These annexes are intended to support safe, effective and patient-centred implementation of WHO-recommended DR-TB treatment regimens across different programmatic settings.
