Global tuberculosis report 2014
World Health Organization
Abstract
The Global Tuberculosis Report 2014 provides a comprehensive assessment of the global tuberculosis (TB) epidemic and progress in prevention, diagnosis and treatment based on data reported by 202 countries and territories. The report analyses the burden of TB disease, including incidence, prevalence and mortality, and evaluates progress towards international targets established within the Millennium Development Goals and the Stop TB Strategy. It highlights that TB remains one of the world’s leading infectious causes of death, with an estimated 9 million new cases and 1.5 million deaths in 2013, while emphasizing that effective diagnosis and treatment have saved millions of lives since 2000.
The publication reviews major areas of TB control, including case notification and treatment outcomes, multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB), laboratory strengthening and diagnostic technologies, TB/HIV collaborative activities, financing, and research and development of new drugs, diagnostics and vaccines. Particular attention is given to the expansion of rapid molecular testing, persistent gaps in MDR-TB treatment, and the need for increased funding and political commitment. The report also outlines the transition towards the post-2015 End TB Strategy, which aims to end the global TB epidemic through integrated patient-centred care, supportive policies and intensified research and innovation.
