Abstract

Introduction: Infectious diseases have a major impact on public health in Brazil, especially for inmates, who represent a vulnerable group due to the precarious structural conditions of the prison system. This scenario favors the spread of diseases such as the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), syphilis, viral hepatitis, tuberculosis, and leprosy, and it is essential to understand the epidemiological behavior of these diseases in this context. Objective: to describe the temporal trends in cases of HIV, syphilis, viral hepatitis, tuberculosis, and leprosy among the population deprived of liberty in Brazil, from 2019 to 2023. Methodology: this is an ecological populationbased study of time series using the segmented log-linear regression model. Data were collected from the system of the National Secretariat for Penal Policies. Results: males were the most affected by transmissible infections. There was a significant increase in HIV cases, while hepatitis showed a reduction. Regional variations were also highlighted. Conclusion: the study reinforces the importance of preventive actions and health care for vulnerable populations within the Brazilian prison system, which points to the need for specific public policies for the prison system. Keywords: Prisoners; Communicable diseases; Time series studies.the spread of the disease, especially among vulnerable populations.
