Abstract
Abstract Introduction Pulmonary tuberculosis represents a major issue in the workplace. This work highlights infectious risks among healthcare workers, particularly occupational tuberculosis, and emphasizes the importance of preventive measures to minimize these risks. Methods This study is based on a case of occupational tuberculosis detected in a resident in visceral surgery at Ibn Rochd University Hospital in Casablanca. The evaluation of his health condition was based on clinical examinations, biological and radiological investigations. Results The presumption of the origin of tuberculosis in this resident is based on the disease’s history, notably a symptomatology characterized by night sweats and asthenia and weight loss that occurred three weeks after being in contact with a patient treated for peritoneal tuberculosis in his department. This led to a consultation and the initiation of antitubercular treatment. A decision was made to grant the resident a medium-term medical leave and a procedure to declare it as an occupational disease was initiated. Discussion Tuberculosis is endemic in Morocco, with 35,000 new cases reported annually and 10.4 million new cases worldwide. Investigation in the workplace regarding the index case is not yet mandatory in contrast to family investigations. Hence, the crucial role of the occupational physician who should direct towards a professional investigation for screening. Following this case, a protocol for managing cases of hospital-acquired occupational tuberculosis was developed by our department. Conclusion Raising awareness among healthcare workers is essential to take necessary preventive measures when in contact with a tuberculosis-infected patient.
