Abstract

Tuberculosis remains a major global public health challenge, with its burden shaped by health system capacity, socioeconomic determinants and, more recently, disruptions associated with the COVID-19 pandemic. This supplementary material to the Global tuberculosis report 2021 provides detailed data, methodological explanations and analytical inputs that underpin global, regional and country-level estimates of tuberculosis burden and response, complementing and supporting interpretation of the main report.

It presents expanded information on incidence, mortality and prevalence, alongside detailed examination of diagnosis, treatment, prevention and financing, as well as progress in research and innovation. Particular attention is given to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on tuberculosis services, including declines in case notifications, treatment coverage and preventive interventions, and their implications for disease trends. The document also explores determinants of tuberculosis, links with universal health coverage, and the use of surveillance systems, surveys and modelling approaches to strengthen measurement and accountability. Drawing on country-reported data and standardized estimation methods, it highlights persistent gaps in detection, access to care and resource allocation. Intended for policymakers, programme managers and technical stakeholders, it supports evidence-informed decision-making and monitoring of progress towards global tuberculosis targets.
