Abstract
Abstract To facilitate host infection, tuberculosis-causing mycobacteria employ five type VII secretion systems (T7SS) to orchestrate the timely secretion of effector proteins, which play central roles in their immune evasion strategy and ensure the uptake of essential nutrients. This article reviews our current structural and functional understanding of mycobacterial T7SS and discusses their potential as targets for novel antimicrobial strategies.
