Pseudomembranous Colitis Caused by <i>Haemophilus Parainfluenzae</i>

Abstract

To the Editors: Although Clostridium difficile is the main pathogenic factor of pseudomembranous enteritis, clinicians may easily overlook other causes. Among the causes of infection, there are also rare reports of pseudomembranous enteritis caused by other bacteria, viruses, and parasites. Herein, we report a case of pseudomembranous enteritis caused by Haemophilus parainfluenzae, as it has not been reported in the literature previously. An 83-year-old man presented with diarrhea for 15 days. He had yellow watery stool 5-6 times/day, accompanied by tenesmus, abdominal distention, wheezing, and cough productive of whitish sputum. The patient had a history of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and had an acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease 57 days before the onset of diarrhea. He was treated with levofloxacin and cefoperazone sulbactam for 10 days and was given 40mg of methylprednisolone sodium succinate to control the wheezing.
