Abstract

Introduction: Pulmonary Tuberculosis in majority of cases is reactivation TB, which is mostly due to drop in immunity. Substance use compromises immunity and promote secondary TB in substance dependents. Objective: To study the effect of Substance dependence on Pulmonary Tuberculosis(PTB) and comparison of effects between newly diagnosed PTB & newly diagnosed drug resistant PTB. Material and Methods: This longitudinal, prospective study included 60 PTB patients and undergone detailed history, clinical examination, sputum examination and radiological study. The effects of substance dependence assessed on newly diagnosed PTB. Observation: Conclusion: The mean age of DR-TB patients was alarmingly low in comparison to whole study population and that of DS-TB. Substance dependence was more in male patients. Female patients showed more drug sensitivity than male patients. DRTB was more associated with Substance dependence. Quitting of substance dependence resulted in more favourable outcome. Adherence to ATD was more in those patients who quitted substance dependence after starting of ATD.
