Abstract
Objectives: To assess the knowledge of healthcare workers regarding Mycobacterium tuberculosis and its prevention. To assess the practices of healthcare workers regarding M. tuberculosis and its prevention. Methodology: An exploratory survey approach was adopted. The sample was 100 healthcare workers working in the selected hospital, who were selected by purposive sampling. A structured knowledge and practice questionnaire was utilized for data collection. The reliability of knowledge and practice questionnaire was established by using Karl Pearson formula. Mean, median and standard deviation were calculated. Results: The mean score of knowledge of healthcare workers is 11.45, and this value indicates that healthcare workers’ knowledge was good on the basis of scoring. Median score of knowledge is 11, which shows that healthcare workers’ knowledge was good, and the value of standard, i.e. 2.75, shows variation from the central value. Frequency and percentage distribution of healthcare workers’ knowledge on the basis of scoring indicates that majority (65 percent) of healthcare workers’ knowledge was good; the mean score of practice of healthcare workers is 5.05, which indicates that healthcare workers’ practice was poor on the basis of scoring; the median value is 6, and this value denotes that healthcare workers was poor; and the standard deviation value 3.2 shows variation from the central value; and frequency and percentage distribution of healthcare workers’ practice on the basis of scoring indicate that majority (52%) of healthcare workers’ practice was poor.
